No bids made on Sabina project

It’s not exactly a case of having to go back to the drawing board, but the first phase of Sabina’s sewer rehabilitation project will be reconfigured and then re-advertised due to no bids being submitted prior to last Friday’s deadline.

“It’s very unusual [to receive no bids],” said Jeff Kerr, project manager at URS Corp., an engineering firm working with the Village of Sabina on the project. In this instance, Kerr said only two general contractors had indicated interest, with one of them dropping out whereas the other one was too high on the price tag so they didn’t make a bid, either.

Kerr said the project will be re-advertised after it has been reconfigured “so it’s more attractive to smaller companies and to people who just do sewer work.”

By making the project simpler, smaller companies will bid on it, he said.

There are “many, many” companies that do sewer rehab work only, Kerr said.

Having to go through the bidding process again will delay things about a month, he said. But the project still is expected to get underway this spring.

Financing is ready for the estimated $600,000 first phase of the town’s sanitary sewer project, Sabina Mayor Dean Carnahan said Monday.

Carnahan estimated that a third to a half of the first-phase work involves relining existing sanitary sewer pipes.

Sabina Village Council will meet in regular session 7 p.m. Thursday at the municipal building.
